To detect the presence of Carboxylic group in the given organic compound.

Experiment – 12

Class – XII

Subject – Chemistry

Aim:-

To detect the presence of Carboxylic group in the given organic compound.

Apparatus:-

Test tube, test tube stand, test tube holder, burner, beaker, litmus paper, match box, watch glass etc.

Detection of Carboxylic Group

Sr. No

Experiment

Observation

Inference

1.

Litmus Test:

Add 1 drop of given organic compound on blue litmus paper.

Blue litmus change into red by Both A & B.

Carboxylic acid [-COOH] group may be present.

R – C – OH + H2O   à   R – C – O - + H3O+

2.

NaHCo3 Test:

To aqua solution of compound dil. NaHCo3 was added.

Brisk efferrensace of a colorless gas evolved in compound B which turned lime water milky.

Carboxylic acid [-COOH] group confirmed

RCOOH + NaHCo3   à    RCOONa + Co2↑ + H2O

3.

Ester formation test:

To 1 ml of organic compound ethanol was added & 2 drops of conc. H2So4 mixture was warmed in water bath for 10 – 15 minutes cooled & pour the content to aqua solution Na2Co3 in beaks smell it

Pleasant fruity smell was detected due to presence of the ester in the compound

Carboxylic acid [-COOH] group confirmed

RCOOH + C2HSoH   à   RCOOC2 H5 + H2O

Conclusion:-

On the basics of above test we conclude that compound contains Carboxylic group.

S. No.
