To detect the presence of alcoholic group.

Experiment – 14

Class – XII

Subject – Chemistry

Aim:-

To detect the presence of alcoholic group.

Apparatus:-

Test tube, test tube stand, test tube holder, burner, beaker, litmus paper, match box, watch glass etc.

Test for Alcoholic Group

Sr. No

Experiment

Observation

Inference

1.

Ceric Ammonium nitrate Test:

To the organic compound 1 ml of ceric ammonium nitrate was added.

Red color was obtained

R – OH group is present

2 R – OH + (NH4)2 Ce (No3)6   à   [(ROH)2 Ce ( No3)4] + 2 NH4 No3

`2.

Sodium metal Test:

To the organic compound in a dry test tube a small piece of sodium metal was added.

Bubbles of H2 gas were evolved

R – OH group is present

2 R- OH + 2 Na   à   2 R – O – Na+ + H2

3.

Ester formation Test:

To the organic compound 1 ml glacial acetic acid & 1 – 3 drops of conc. H2So4 was added. The mixture was wormed in water bath for 10 – 15 minutes cool & poured the content

Pleasant smell due to presence of ester.

R – OH group is present

R – OH + R’ – C – OH   ß à  R’ – C – O – R + H2O

Conclusion:

On the basis of above test we conclude that the given organic compound contained alcoholic [R – OH] group.
